The Timeline of Indian Classical Music

The Ancient Era 

The Ancient Era of Indian Classical music lasted from the Vedic or prehistoric times, until the fifth century. This was when the first ever mentions of this art form were found. Indian Classical music originated in this era.

The Medieval Era 

The Medieval Era of Indian Classical Music began in the 5th century and ended in the 15th century. This period was the last in which Indian Classical Music was a unanimous art form. During the second half of the medieval era, music in India was divided into two distinct forms: Hindustani Classical and Carnatic Classical Music.

The concept of a Raga was clearly established, and the development of music was fueled by the Bhakti Movement.

The Modern Era 

The modern era lasted from the 15th century until the second half of the 20th century. This was the era of the famous trinity of Carnatic Music, also known as Indian Classical Music's Golden Age.

The Post Independence  Period

The post independence period began in the second half of the 20th century. We continue to see the active developments of classical music in this era. This era is characterized by jugalbandis and modern fusion, while the traditional forms of both the classical arts are still being preserved.
